B. Payden Photography 365 - Day 45 - 03/27/10 Salamander
This image was recorded at Sandy Bottom Nature Park in Hampton, Va. in the spring of 2008. I was three stories up on an observation platform, overlooking a wetlands preserve, shooting Blue Herons and Great White Egrets when I spotted this Salamander on the railing. I quickly swung my 300mm lens around on the tripod and captured this image a second before the Salamander disappeared over the side of the railing.

B. Payden Photography 365 - Day 44 - 03/26/10 Battleship USS Wisconsin
This image is a waterline view of the Battleship USS Wisconsin down the port side of the ship at it's Nauticus berth. The Battleship is now a museum ship and permanently berthed at the the Nauticus Maritime Museum in Norfolk, Virginia. I particularly like this view of the USS Wisconsin due to the dramatic diffused winter lighting giving the Battleship a somber flat gray appearance.

B. Payden Photography 365 - Day 30 - 03/12/10: Norfolk, Va. Waterfront
This image is of the Norfolk, VA. waterfront shot from the Portsmouth side of the Elizabeth River. I used my 17-40mm wide angle lens to capture as much of the waterfront as possible. I also use this lens for my Real Estate and Virtual Tour photography because, as you can see, the Canon "L" glass has very little distortion even at the 17mm range.

I recorded this image in Virginia Beach at the 2008 SK8R bash held at the skate park in Mt. Trashmore Park. I captured this image of a skater on the half-pipe during one of the vertical competitions of the event. I love the profile of the athlete captured in this action shot. This event was one of the more interesting sporting events I have shot as I grew up in Va Beach and skating and surfing are a big part of growing up here.

B. Payden Photography 365 Day 27 03/09/10: Astrophotography
The full moon the evening of December 12, 2008 was the biggest and brightest full moon of 2008. The moon looked 14% larger and 30% brighter than a typical full moon due to it being the closet to earth in its elliptical orbit, also known as perigee. The last time the moon appeared this large and bright was in 1994 when it again was at its perigee. I recorded this image with a tripod mounted 300mm lens and 1/320 sec shutter speed with post processing in Photoshop to bring out the crater details. This is the only Astrophotography I have attempted and think it was a pretty successful image for my first attempt.

B Payden Photography 365 - Day 26 03/08/10: Hampton Coliseum with Holiday Lighting
This image is of the Hampton Coliseum in Hampton, Va. with their holiday lighting. This shot is of the front of the coliseum and the fountain. Every year between Thanksgiving and New Years they change the regular white accent lighting to these beautiful alternating colored lights. I recorded this image just after Christmas of 2008 with an almost 2 second exposure, I love the reflected lights in the fountain and every time I see the Coliseum lit like this I know it's the holidays and I'm home!

B. Payden Photography 365 - Day 25 - 03/07/10: Lone Sailor Statue, Wisconsin Square - Norfolk, Va.
Today's Blog is dedicated to my father, a retired Navy Chief Warrant Officer and all my friends either active duty or retired Navy. I grew up in a Navy town and come from a Navy family so the ocean and pride in our military is in my blood. Today's image is of the Lone Sailor statue at Wisconsin Square in Norfolk, Va. This exact replica of the original statue, which stands at the Navy Memorial in Washington DC, is located right next to the museum ship USS Wisconsin and overlooks that famous battleship. Behind the Lone Sailor is a memorial to Norfolk based ships that have suffered an event since WWII that resulted in a significant loss of life. Included in the memorial are such ships as the USS Cole, the USS Newport News, and the USS Liberty.

B. Payden Photography 365 - Day 24 - 03/06/10: Battleship Wisconsin
This image is of the Battleship Wisconsin berthed at the Nauticus Maritime Museum at Waterside in Norfolk, Va. I recorded the images in December of 2008. To get this vantage I wanted, looking down on the Wisconsin's deck and its 16" guns, I went to the top of a parking garage across the street from Nauticus. It was a blistering cold day with strong winds but this beautiful image of the Wisconsin was well worth it.

B. Payden Photography 365 - Day 23 - 03/05/10: Green Screen Portrait
Today's image is a green screen Portrait I shot last week. I dropped out the green screen and replaced it with a muslin background, I then Sepia toned the image, softened, and added a subtle black vignette to accent the model. I love the lines in this image and think it was a very successful image from the first test of my new green screen.

B Payden Photography 365 - Day 22 - 03/04/10: High School Football
Today's image is from the same shoot as yesterday's image, Woodside at Bethel High School. I shot this image from the opposite side of the field from the receiver with a 300mm lens. I followed the football with my lens and snapped the shutter as soon as I saw the receiver leave the ground for this reception. The receiver subsequently ran the ball 15 yards for a Bethel first down.
B Payden Photography 365 - Day 21 - 03/03/10: High School Football
As my shooting schedule permits i cover High School sports for Gameday Magazine in Hampton Roads, Va. This image was recorded October 2009 and features Woodside HS vs. Bethel HS. The running back for Woodside scored seconds after I pressed the shutter to record this great action shot. You can see the determination on the Bethel player to catch the Woodside RB.

I shot this beautiful intimate wedding this past weekend at the Poplar Springs Inn in Casanova, Va. The bride and groom were a very nice couple and their ceremony was simple and heartfelt. I was very pleased to share the day with this wonderful couple and to capture memories for them that they will cherish for a lifetime!

I recorded this image in October 2001 in Las Vegas, NV for two very good friends of mine. They flew me out to Vegas to shoot their Wedding Reception at Mandalay Bay. B Payden Photography 365 - Day 7: Sunset, Skyline Drive 02-17-10"
This image was recorded in 2006 in Shenandoah National Park along Skyline Drive right at sunset. I shot this with a Canon EOS A2 camera on Fuji Chrome Velvia 100. The twilight sky was this exact shade of blue and purple and I choose the Fuji slide film to better record the shadow detail and the vibrant colors. I scanned this image from the original slide. It is easy to see how the Blue Ridge Mountains got their name when you see beautiful colors like this along the drive.

B Payden Photography 365 - Day 4: "Capitol Spring #1" 02-14-10"
I for one am sick of all the snow we have had in the Washington DC Metro area so I have gone into my collection and chosen this image "Capitol Spring #1" as today's post. I recorded this image in April of 1998 when I was still shooting film, the US Capitol Grounds are always the prettiest in the spring with the tulips blooming and the trees in bloom. Spring is almost here!

B Payden Photography 365 - Day 2: Yorktown National Cemetery 2-12-2010
This image is of the Yorktown National Cemetery. The site was selected in 1866 as a convenient location to several Civil War Battle from the Peninsular Campaign. Of the total of 2,204 burials in the cemetery, there are 1,596 marked graves. 747 are of known persons and 1,436 unknown. Those buried here were for the most part Union Army soldiers, although 10 Confederate soldiers and three wives are also interred here. The Cemetery sits in the middle of the Yorktown Battlefield and is well worth a contemplative visit to pay our respects to those who have gave the last full measure for our country.
